If you’re planning to modernize your home, whether it be to sell or for your own enjoyment, we want to share with you what small details make a big difference, especially if you have a lower budget.

Lighting. Though often overlooked, interior lighting is a key aspect of your home. Industrial lighting has become increasingly popular in the past year. With rustic finishes, sleeker, richer tones the industrial variety has the ability to ‘pop out’ with neutral tones and distressed finishes. Commonly we see industrial lighting above islands in the kitchen and in dining areas.

If industrial is too dramatic for your preferences, you may consider a minimalist trend which opts for simpler, cleaner designs. These low-profile fixtures focus on geometric designs, neutral colors and clean lines over extravagant form. Commonly, these low-profile fixtures are found in bedrooms or the kitchen. They can also be found in the living areas as lamps or accent pieces.

Doors. If you’ve watched any home and garden TV shows, followed Pinterest or Modern Home magazines, you’ve seen the trend with sliding barn doors. Sliding barn doors come in a variety of colors and styles complimented with unique hardware. You can use barn doors to create a central piece in bedroom closets, or pantry or find a space saving solution when a traditional door won’t do. You can re-purpose virtually any door with a barn door. If this an area you’d like to explore and want to hire a local specialist contact Cassana Custom Woodworking & Decor’ at 780-986-7474.

White Cabinetry. More people are taking the time and saving many dollars to repaint their kitchen and bathroom cabinets rather than replacing them. We personally know a few families who have spray painted their once espresso cabinets a bright, beautiful white and they turned out incredible! If this is an area you’d consider doing yourself, be sure to speak to Leduc Wall Fashions for the right paint and sprayer to get the job done well.

Distressed Furniture. Another sure trend to help modernize your home is painting old furniture with chalk paint to create an aged, distressed appeal. One major benefit to chalk paint is that it will cover over just about every surface that you can think of; wood, plastic, tile, glass and more. Like any painting project, there will be some prep work involved so be sure to do research. Again Leduc Wall Fashions could be a great source of support, or if you prefer to hire a project like this out, talk with Teresa Santana at 780-234-4017. She’s a favorite for many local families!

Add color.  If you’re one who enjoys neutral colors, you’ll want to add a few well-placed bright pops of color to help bring your decor together. Fresh, bright throw pillows in the living room, a throw rug in your bathroom, a red kettle on your stove or a red blender on the counter. Fresh, bright towels in your kitchen and bathrooms, bright pillows in bedrooms and more. Maybe you spend a little extra on a beautiful piece of artwork. If you missed the art walk last month, check out our good friend Monica Precott’s incredible, local talent on Facebook or Instagram. She offers stunning art work with incredible color and contrasts!
